Futurpreneur will lend up to $75,000 to a founder in their twenties or thirties with no business track record. What it asks for in return is a complete business plan, a 24-month cash flow forecast, and two years of working with a mentor.

A Futurpreneur loan is one of the few ways to finance a business in Canada before it has a trading history. Futurpreneur is a national not-for-profit that combines financing with mandatory mentorship for founders aged 18 to 39. Its main program can include a co-loan from BDC, which is how most early-stage founders end up with BDC financing before they would qualify for BDC's own products.

Futurpreneur runs two programs most founders choose between: the Startup program and Side Hustle. This guide compares them, sets out the full eligibility list, and explains what reviewers look for in the plan.

The BDC co-loan inside a Futurpreneur loan

The Startup program's larger amount comes from pairing Futurpreneur's loan with BDC financing of up to $50,000. Its terms differ from the Futurpreneur portion:

  • Rate: BDC's floating base rate plus 1.65%.
  • Term: 5 years, interest-only for the first year from the BDC authorization date.
  • Prepayment: allowed, but you pay an indemnity equal to three months' interest on the amount prepaid, except that once a year, on the authorization anniversary, you can repay 15% of the outstanding principal without it.
  • Fee: $50 processing fee, deducted from the first disbursement.

Futurpreneur notes that BDC's eligibility can differ from its own.

Futurpreneur eligibility: the full list

These are Futurpreneur's general criteria. Side Hustle is exempt from the two marked.

  • Age 18 to 39 when you apply. Your full application, including the business plan and cash flow, must be submitted before your 40th birthday.
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident, living in Canada.
  • Business stage: not yet operating, or operating full time for 24 months or less. (Side Hustle exempt.)
  • Full-time employment: the business must provide full-time, sustainable employment for you. (Side Hustle exempt.)
  • Market ready: products or services ready to sell, not still in research and development.
  • Registered and operating in Canada, with revenue going into a Canadian business bank account.
  • Majority control: applicants must hold more than 50% ownership and control.
  • Relevant training or experience in your industry or business idea.
  • A personal credit check (hard inquiry). No minimum score is published.
  • Bankruptcy and proposals: five years from a bankruptcy discharge, or one year from a consumer proposal's Certificate of Full Performance.
  • Taxes up to date, and neither you nor the business named in a lawsuit.
  • No refinancing: loan proceeds cannot be used to pay off existing debt.

Futurpreneur also excludes some industries, including residential construction and rentals, lending and brokering, vehicle and equipment sales or leasing, bars and nightclubs, cannabis and vaping, and gambling. Mixed business models are reviewed case by case, so check the full list on Futurpreneur's eligibility page if you are near the line.

Side Hustle specifics

Side Hustle requires a full-time income outside the business, and the side business has to remain your secondary income for the next 12 months. It is designed for testing a business without quitting your job, which is a sensible way to build the track record that larger lenders want later.

The business plan and 24-month cash flow

Both programs require a complete business plan and a 24-month cash flow forecast before you can apply through Futurpreneur's MyFP portal. Futurpreneur offers templates but does not write plans for you. This is where most applications slow down, and where the quality of the file shows. Reviewers want to see:

Assumptions you can defend

Where each revenue number comes from: prices, volumes, customers, conversion rates. A forecast built from a real sales plan beats a percentage growth line.

A loan that fits the cash flow

Interest-only in year one, then principal and interest for four years. Your forecast should show that the business can carry the full payment when year two starts.

How you will pay yourself

For the Startup program, the business has to support you full time. A forecast that leaves no room for the owner's living costs raises an obvious question.

Why you

Your training, experience and early traction: pre-orders, a first customer, a supplier agreement. Futurpreneur lists relevant experience as a requirement.

After you submit, Futurpreneur says to expect contact within 5 to 10 business days because of application volume.

Equipment financing for a new business

Futurpreneur's maximum is $75,000, and equipment can use up a large share of it quickly. If your start-up needs machinery, a vehicle or a kitchen fit-out, it is worth looking at equipment financing for a new business separately. Because the equipment secures the loan or lease, lenders can be more flexible about a short trading history than they are with unsecured lending.

Financing the equipment on its own terms can keep your Futurpreneur funds for working capital, inventory and marketing. If you do this, make sure your 24-month cash flow includes both sets of payments, since Futurpreneur's reviewers will look at whether the business can carry all of its debt. Note that Futurpreneur's industry exclusions cover businesses that sell or lease vehicles and equipment, not businesses that use equipment. See our equipment leasing and financing page for start-up options.

Over 39, or already past 24 months?

Futurpreneur is not the only route. If you have been operating for 12 months or more, BDC's own products may fit, and our guide to BDC startup loan requirements maps them by business age. For setting up the business itself, our list of tools for Canadian startups covers incorporation, banking and more.

Where a broker helps

Canada Business Loan Experts helps founders confirm they qualify before they apply, then get the plan, the 24-month cash flow and the supporting documents ready to submit. You can apply to Futurpreneur directly, and many founders do. For founders who want the numbers built properly first, see CBLE Funding Advisory.

How we are paid

Canada Business Loan Experts is an independent commercial finance broker. We are not part of Futurpreneur or BDC and do not make lending decisions. We may be compensated by lenders, including BDC, when we introduce and package an application. You can always apply directly, and engaging us does not guarantee approval.
